Chase Bank History


The history of Chase dates back to September 1, 1799 when the Manhattan Company was formed by Aaron Burr in a house at 40 Wall Street, New York City. The Chase National Bank was formed in 1877 by John Thompson and it acquired a number of small banks in the 1920s through its Chase Securities Corporation. Chase Manhattan Bank was created in 1955 following the merger of Chase National Bank and The Manhattan Company. For this bank, the new logo was designed by Chermayeff & Geismar in 1961 which remains a part of the bank’s logo even today. The Chase Manhattan Bank was acquired by Chemical Bank of New York in July 1966. The most phenomenal acquisition took place in December 2000, when the combined Chase Manhattan completed the acquisition of J.P. Morgan & CO leading to the formation of JP Morgan Chase Bank. The bank then added Bear Stearns & Co. and Washington Mutual to it in 2009.
